As the Department of Finance and Banking at Balıkesir University Burhaniye Faculty of Applied Sciences, we respectfully extend our greetings and are pleased to share information about our educational philosophy, academic expertise, and vision for the future.

In an era in which the financial system is being reshaped on a global scale, banking services are being transferred to digital platforms, and data-driven decision-making processes have become decisive in the finance sector, our primary objective as the Department of Finance and Banking is to prepare our students not only for today’s financial world but also for the financial world of tomorrow. Our educational philosophy is built upon a holistic approach that integrates a strong theoretical foundation with analytical thinking skills, ethical responsibility, and practical competencies.

While our four-year undergraduate program presents the fundamental concepts of economics, finance, and banking within a solid academic framework, it also aims to equip our students with the qualifications necessary to make a difference in the global competitive environment. Our program structure has been shaped in line with an academic vision that is grounded in research-based teaching, critical thinking, analytical reasoning skills, and an understanding of ethical leadership. Our priority is to educate our students not only as individuals possessing technical knowledge but also as conscious professionals who are capable of evaluating the economic and social impacts of financial decisions.

Our department is an academic unit that closely follows the dynamic nature of financial markets and continuously updates its curriculum accordingly. In addition to core courses such as traditional banking theory, monetary and credit systems, financial statement analysis, and investment instruments, our curriculum also includes contemporary fields such as Financial Technologies (FinTech), Digital Banking, Payment Systems, Blockchain Applications, Data Analytics, Sustainable Finance, and Risk Management. In this way, our students learn classical finance theories while also gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze contemporary issues such as open banking practices, artificial intelligence–based credit assessment models, digital assets, and cybersecurity. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated in parallel with national and international developments in the field of finance and banking.

The educational processes of our department are carried out in alignment with national and international standards in accordance with quality assurance principles. Our program is implemented in compliance with STAR accreditation criteria as well as the Bologna Process and ECTS principles; it is continuously updated in line with quality assurance, continuous improvement, and stakeholder feedback, aiming to educate graduates who are capable of leading change.

An important component of our program is to support our students in becoming prepared for professional licensing processes through which they can certify their professional qualifications. Our course contents are structured to include knowledge areas aligned with the scope of licensing examinations in capital markets and the finance sector. Within this framework, our students are informed and encouraged to participate in relevant licensing examinations. We believe that holding a professional license will contribute to our graduates entering the sector with greater confidence and competence. At the same time, we evaluate licensing processes not merely as examination success, but as an important indicator of professional ethics, regulatory knowledge, and technical competence.

Our student-centered approach manifests itself at every stage of the educational process. The academic advisory system, individual career planning, internship opportunities, applied courses, and seminars conducted with industry representatives are important instruments that support both the academic and professional development of our students. Through project-based learning practices, our students have the opportunity to work on real-life scenarios in areas such as financial analysis, portfolio management, and banking applications. In addition, particular importance is given to the development of teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving skills.

Our department regards internationalization as one of its strategic priorities. Through various international mobility opportunities, particularly the Erasmus+ exchange program, our students have the opportunity to study in different countries and observe different financial systems on-site. This experience increases our students’ awareness of global financial markets and contributes to their ability to work in multicultural environments. Joint studies conducted through international collaborations and academic networks strengthen the global academic interaction of our department.

Research activities constitute a complementary and reinforcing element of our educational philosophy. Our academic staff conduct scientific studies in areas such as financial markets, banking regulations, sustainable finance, behavioral finance, risk modeling, and digital transformation; the outputs of these studies are integrated into course contents. Thus, our students gain the opportunity to engage with current academic debates and develop data-driven analytical skills.

As the Department of Finance and Banking, our goal is to educate individuals who possess advanced analytical thinking skills, are committed to ethical values, are open to technological innovations, and embrace the principle of lifelong learning. We support our students in building successful careers across a wide spectrum, including the banking sector, capital markets, public institutions, and international financial organizations.

Our department has adopted as a fundamental principle the provision of an inclusive learning environment that prioritizes academic development and encourages critical thinking. In line with our approach that observes quality standards in education, research, and social contribution, I respectfully state our determination to continue offering an academic framework that maximizes our students’ competencies and to educate qualified human resources in the field of finance.
